Sixth Form Centre
Bath Academy Sixth Form Centre is the independent Sixth Form College
section of Bath Academy dedicated to the successful teaching of
GCSE and A level subjects.
Both British and International students aged 16+ are welcome to
study:
- A nine month GCSE course of 6 subjects
- A two year A level course of 3 or 4 subjects
- A one year A2 level course of 3 or 4 subjects
- A one term (September – January) or one year course
to retake modules at AS or A2
- A five term A level course (start January) in 3 subjects
- Easter revision courses geared to individual needs
- 'Last minute' course (April-May) on examination
technique and practice
We offer a wide range (35+) of subjects at AS and A2 level, including
many which schools and colleges of Further Education are unable
to offer, and there are no restrictions on subject combinations.
All classes are small (average 6 students) and some subjects may
be taught individually.
As well as tuition each week in each subject (including laboratory
(practical) work for Science subjects) there is a further 3 hours
per week per subject of supervised Private Study where the teachers
will set work or give examination paper practice. Students are
expected to do a further 3 hours a week study on their own in each
subject.
In order to assess progress and understanding, regular (at least
once every half term) tests are set and marked and the results
reported to parents. ‘Mock’ examination weeks are held
at the end of the Autumn and Spring Terms and formal reports are
issued to parents twice a year.
In September, all students receive an introductory Study Skills
course to help them make the transition from GCSE to AS levels
and help them on their way to becoming confident independent learners.
Before the first ‘mock’ examination session, training
in revision and examination technique is given. In September of
the A2 year, information on choosing a degree subject, university,
the UCAS process and writing a Personal Statement is given to the
students.
Each student has a Personal Tutor to oversee academic progress
and help with any personal or work-related problems and, at the
start of the A2 course, an additional UCAS Tutor is appointed who
will help the student throughout the whole application process
and write a reference. Advice and practical help is also available
at the time of the publication of A level results.
Subject teachers are all approachable and unstintingly give of
their time and efforts to help the students and the Academic Co-ordinator,
Vice-Principal and Senior Tutor are always available to help with
any problems or queries.
Attendance at lessons is monitored on a daily basis and parents
will be informed of any cause for concern with regard to punctuality,
attendance, work rate and progress. Parents are very welcome to
contact or visit the College to discuss any concerns they may have
or to learn first hand about their son’s/daughter’s
progress.
To complement the academic studies at Bath Academy Sixth Form
Centre, there is a varied social programme and students are encouraged
to suggest or organise their own activities.
Local students live at home and there is hostel and homestay accommodation
for those from abroad or elsewhere in the UK.
Bath Academy Sixth Form Centre prides itself on its focus on the
individual student and flexibility in meeting his or her needs,
be they a specific learning difficulty, choice of subjects, out
of the ordinary past educational or school history or wish for
the best in British education.
