The CIFE Christmas Quiz Challenge

Posted: 6th January 2026

Apparently the CIFE Inter-College Quiz Challenge has been running for about 15 years according to Sally Powell, the Quiz Challenge organiser and Principal of MPW, London. I think I am probably the only staff member who has taken the five members of a Bath Academy team up to London over that time so I feel quite privileged. The event is now generally held at Queen Mary University of London.

What are my thoughts about the Quiz looking back? I have to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, witnessing the fun and excitement of competing with other CIFE colleges (the Council for Independent Education) in a very professionally run, ‘University Challenge’ style tournament.

Are there any benefits taking part? Well, of course!  For one thing, it looks very good on your CV and acts as a potential talking point in any interview. Some of the questions and answers may stick in your mind in your final exams, for example, the word ‘cochlea’ referring to the spiral cavity of the inner ear. This came up as one question: ‘What is the derivation of the word ‘cochlea’? If you know a bit of Latin and Greek, you will know that ‘kokhlias’ in Greek means ‘snail’ so the cochlea refers to the shape of a snail’s shell. As a result – three subjects covered – Biology, Latin and Greek! A little bit intense? What about ‘Which of these songs is not by Carli B? – A. Enough, B. Everybody, C. Safe, D. Outside? Answers on a postcard.

By the way, we came second once and missed the top spot by one point! What’s the first prize? The prize is a tour of the House of Lords followed by afternoon tea in the Lords’ tearoom hosted by Lord Lexden. Interested? If so, sign up for next year if you are around!
