Supporting Our Students During Ramadan
Ramadan is a deeply meaningful time of reflection, prayer, community and generosity for many Muslim students and staff across our wider Bath community. At Bath Academy, we recognise the importance of this month and the role we all play in creating a supportive, understanding environment.
As the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the dates of Ramadan change each year and are confirmed by the sighting of the new moon. In 2026, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 17 February, with fasting starting the following day, and to conclude around the evening of Thursday 19 March (some communities may observe the end from the evening of Wednesday 18 March), depending on the moon sighting.
At Bath Academy, inclusion is not just a value – it is something we practice in our daily routines and decisions. During Ramadan, students who are fasting abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. This can naturally affect energy levels, concentration, and daily rhythms.
We encourage our staff and students to be mindful and considerate during this time. Practical ways we can offer support include:
-
Being thoughtful when scheduling assessments, mock exams or intensive activities
-
Avoiding unnecessary late-day commitments where possible
-
Showing understanding if a student needs a short break for prayer
-
Creating an environment where students feel comfortable speaking to staff about reasonable adjustments
Small acts of consideration and compassion can make a significant difference.
Ramadan is not only about fasting. It is a time of spiritual growth, self-discipline and community connection. For many young people studying away from home, it can also be a time when a sense of belonging matters more than ever.
At Bath Academy, we are proud of our diverse student body and the perspectives it brings to our learning community. We want our Muslim students to feel respected and supported – not just through words, but through everyday actions that reflect empathy and understanding.
As Ramadan approaches, we extend our warmest wishes to all who will be observing. May it be a month of peace, reflection and strength.
