A Level Resits: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the one-year and six-month retake courses?

The one-year course runs from September to June and gives you full, in-depth coverage of the specification alongside weekly exam practice. It suits students who want to make a bigger improvement or add a new subject. The six-month course runs from January to June and is designed for students who have studied the subject before and need to improve by around one grade.

When do the resit courses start?

The six-month resit course starts in January and the one-year course starts in September. Both courses finish with the summer exams in June. The next start dates are January 2027 and September 2027.

How many subjects can I retake?

You can study between one and three subjects on either course. Your personal tutor will help you decide which subjects to focus on, based on the university course you are aiming for.

Can I take a new subject alongside my retakes?

Yes. The one-year course is suitable for students who need to study an additional subject as well as improving their existing grades. Talk to us about your plans and we will help you put together the right combination.

Which subjects can I retake?

We offer retakes in Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, French, Further Maths, Geography, History, Maths, Media Studies, Philosophy, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology and Spanish. Some less common subjects, such as Accounting, Classical Civilisation, German, Italian, Japanese and Classical Greek, may also be available, so please get in touch if your subject is not listed.

Which exam boards do you teach, and can I stay with my original board?

We host exams for AQA, Edexcel Pearson, OCR and WJEC. You can choose whichever exam board you want, but most students stay with the board they were originally taught. If you are unsure which board you sat your exams with, your previous school or results slip will tell you.

Will I need to redo my coursework?

It depends on your subject and exam board, and it is your responsibility to check whether your previous coursework mark can be carried forward. If you are unsure, you can contact our Exams Officer, Alan Chapman, at Alan.Chapman@BathAcademy.co.uk.

How much can I expect my grades to improve?

Our resit students improve by an average of two grades, and more than half of them go on to Russell Group universities. Some improve much further: recent resit students have improved by as much as six grades and gone on to study at Durham and King’s College London.

What support will I get besides lessons?

Every resit student has a personal tutor, weekly exam technique practice and two sets of mock exams in the spring term. You will also complete academic profiling (CAT4) and a Morrisby careers assessment, and get full support with your UCAS application.

Can I apply to university while I am retaking?

Yes. Many students apply through UCAS during their retake year, and our team will support you with your personal statement, references and course choices. Your personal tutor will also help you think about the timing that is right for you.

How big are the classes?

Teaching takes place in small groups, and classes usually have no more than six students, so you get far more individual attention and feedback than in a typical school class.

Is accommodation available?

Yes. Students under 18 can live in our College Residence, a Grade I listed Georgian building around ten minutes’ walk from the college and city centre, with residence staff on hand. We also arrange full-board homestays with carefully selected local families for students aged 16 and over. Older students can choose private student accommodation in Bath.

How much does a retake course cost?

Fees are discussed individually with our admissions team. You can find more information on our fees page.
